Western Mountains

Libya’s Western Mountain Region is a delight. Appreciate the beauty of the scenery as you set out to discover the myriad surprises hidden within its landscape.

The first to be uncovered is the ancient site of Gasr Al-Haj. This almost circular building with hundreds of rooms is used to store grain and olive oil for villagers of the area.

Your ascent into the mountain range continues towards the village of Tarmissa. Uniquely sited, this ancient village built of stones stands on a cliff with parts carved into the mountain.

In the nearby town of Jadu visit the culture house exhibiting traditional clothes and handicrafts of the indigenous people of the region.

In Geriyan visit a troglodyte’s house built well below ground with a central courtyard open to the sky and have the chance to browse in the road stalls of the town for souvenirs.

Gheryan is known as the ‘capital of pottery’ and most of the stalls sell pottery produced in the factories of the region. Enjoy local sweets and the traditional juice Karkadeh at the cave house where you can visit its various rooms before returning to Tripoli.

A lunch box prepared by the ship will be available for your convenience during the tour.

 

Special Notes:
Comfortable walking shoes and a sun hat recommended.

Tour suitable for elderly but not handicapped passengers. Not wheelchair accessible.

No fees for cameras and videos at sites visited.

Toilets available at Jadu museum and Ghariyan.

Due to unsuitable places for lunch ashore a lunchbox from the ship must be prepared.
