Tripoli City Orientation

Libya’s largest city is also the country’s historical capital known as the “Bride of the Mediterranean". Founded by the Phoenicians in 1000 BC the city was later absorbed by the Roman Empire falling into the hands of the Arab Muslims in 643 AD. Some of the city's ruins bear the marks of the various civilizations that once prospered in the city.

The Arch of Marcus Aurelius represents the Roman era while Al Saraya Al Hamra fortress stands as a witness to the various nationalities who inhabited the city. This huge castle was probably built on the ruins of a Roman building dating from the 1st century A.D. Arab Muslims, Spaniards, the Knights of St. John, Ottoman Turks and Italians used it as a government building. Now it houses the largest museum in the country featuring an impressive collection of Libyan, Phoenicians, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Muslim antiquities.

A city orientation drive will unveil its combined rich and colourful heritage. Visit the museum and continue on a walk in the Old Market, a vibrant part of the city, a must for any visitor to Tripoli.

Comfortable walking shoes and a sun hat recommended.

Tour suitable for elderly and assisted, physically challenged persons. Not wheelchair accessible.

Several stairs at all floors of Tripoli museum.

Participants are dropped at the Arch of Marcus Aurelius and walk through the Old Market to Green Square where the museum is situated or vice versa.

Tour sequence may vary however all features and inclusions will remain unchanged.
