The Lost City of Ubar

Depart in 4x4 wheel a/c jeeps listening to your driver guide explaining the culture and history of the region as you drive towards the Qara Mountain range.

A comfort stop will be made along the way then drive westward on a graded road stopping for photographs in Frankincense Valley.

Continue to Rub Al Khali (The Empty Quarters) for a roller coaster in the sand dunes.

The lost city of Ubar, buried for centuries under waves of undulating sand was spotted by satellite and in 1982 a team of archaeologists led by Sir Ranulph Fienness unearthed ruins of the fabled city chronicled in classical works as the “Atlantis of the Sands.”

A series of archaeological excavations brought to life interesting artifacts on display in the small museum on the site. Signposts along the paths of the excavated site explain the various foundations unearthed.

A simple but tasty box lunch will be served at a campsite in Ubar where the “Rolls Royce of the desert”, the camel, can be viewed up close

 

Special Notes:
No shorts, sleeveless outfits or beachwear allowed.

Very basic toilets at the rest stop en route.

Comfortable walking shoes recommended.

Jeeps do not have a PA system.

Drivers are very knowledgeable of the entire region and act as guides but their command of English is basic.

Tour not recommended for elderly persons, children, pregnant women or persons suffering from back problems.

Not wheelchair accessible.

Maximum of 2 hrs walking and standing on partially flat and uneven sandy and rough ground.

Toilet facilities available at the campsite.

Off road drive rugged, bumpy and dusty
