Journey to Dougga
The northernmost country in Africa has been occupied by Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French, gaining independence from France in 1956.
It offers superb beaches, spectacular desert scenery and a wealth of historical sites dating back nearly 3,000 years to when the ancient city of Carthage dominated the entire western Mediterranean.
The combination of Islamic culture and European approach makes Tunisia a very popular North African holiday destination.
Tunis (La Goulette)
La Goulette is the port of Tunis, capital of Tunisia. French, Maltese and Italians and a large community of Tunisian/French Jews have been living here since colonial times but all left in the late seventies.
It is a short drive to Tunis, considered one of the most important and wealthiest cities in the Arab world; but the city feels neither Arab nor African.
It's a place where old and new mix without conflict, both the Moorish architecture and the French influence and way of life.
A laid-back city, with friendly, sophisticated inhabitants and broad boulevards; very liberal by Islamic standards and much more Western than you’d expect.
