SYRIA

Officially the Syrian Arab Republic, Syria is a country in Western Asia, bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

Modern Syria was established after the 1st World War as a French mandate and gained independence in April 1946. It encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires from the third millennium BC. Its capital city, Damascus, is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. The country’s population is made up of Sunni Muslims, Alawis, Christians and Druze.

Tartous

It is the second largest port city in Syria after Latakia and the largest city in Tartous Governorate.

The History of Tartous goes back to the 2nd millennium BC when it was founded as a Phoenician colony. The city was favored by Emperor Constantine for its devotion to the cult of the Virgin Mary; the first chapel to be dedicated to the Virgin was built here in the 3rd century.

Arwad, the only inhabited island on the Syrian coast dating back to the Phoenicians, is located a few kilometers off the beachfront boulevard of modern Tartous.
