Muscat Impressions
Officially called the Sultanate of Oman it is the oldest independent state in the Arab world, and one of the more traditional countries in the Gulf region.
Occupying the south-east corner of the Arabian peninsula, it has a strategically important position at the mouth of the Gulf.
Oman's tourism attractions include a largely-untouched coastline, mountains, deserts and the burgeoning capital Muscat, with its forts, palaces and old walled city
Muscat
The capital of Oman and the seat of government.
Since the ascension of Sultan Qaboos to the throne in 1970, Muscat has experienced rapid infrastructural development that has led to the growth of a vibrant economy and a multi-ethnic society.
Low-lying white buildings typify most of Muscat's urban landscape, while the port district of Muttrah with its cornice and harbor form the northeastern periphery of the city.
Muscat's economy is dominated by trade, petroleum and porting. Spotlessly clean, with manicured lawns and flowering gardens, well preserved cultural heritage blending harmoniously with modern lifestyles, excellent road system, top class hotels and restaurants make Muscat a “high end” destination with a large number of expats from many countries, mainly India living here. The twin forts of Jalali and Mirani hark back to the 16th century, while in the suburb of Muttrah dhows doze at anchor and a fish market does brisk business. The souk here is an Aladdin’s cave of brassware, stalls peddling silver and spice, tailors cutting silks between sips of mint tea.
